Usually, most FECHTERs stay in Alsace
There are few FECHTERs in the south, near Toulouse, because many Alsacians
(people from the Alsace region in northeastern France) moved to Alsace after
escaping with their lives during World War II (1939-1945).
The Alsacian people had two choices:
stay and be forced to join the German Army,
or escape.
Southern France was the only part of the country that was not occupied
during the war; it was an international refuge for people from many nations
-- Spanish republicans, Italians , and northern people.
That’s why Fechters can be found in southern France.
